Why I wrote this
Last spring I planned what I thought was a foolproof picnic — sandwiches, a bottle of wine, the whole aesthetic — and set our old thin blanket down on grass that looked dry but definitely was not. Twenty minutes in, my jeans were soaked through and the bread had gone soggy from underneath, which is a special kind of disappointing.
I asked a couple of friends what they used and got two different answers, so I ended up comparing a padded foam mat against this extra-large waterproof one before deciding. The foam one was bulky and awkward to fold, but this blanket rolled up small enough to toss in the trunk without thinking about it.
Since then it's been to three picnics, a soccer game on damp turf, and one impromptu beach nap, and the bottom has stayed completely dry every time. It's honestly made me actually want to go on picnics again instead of dreading the setup.
